Skating on the Lake

We went skating today at Bowness, which is just down by the river. This is a lagoon that you can boat on in the summer and freezes over in the winter. It was just lovely to be able to skate outside on a frozen pond on Christmas Eve with Christmas music playing in the background. They even had fires, in concrete drums, on the ice for you to warm your hands (and bum). Just perfect! View some more photos - click here

Zoo Lights

Every year leading up to Christmas The Calgary Zoo create Zoo Lights, where they employ Clark Griswold to blitz the whole Zoo in lights. They have lots of fires going around the park and activities for the kids. For more pictures click here

The Teddy Bear Toss!

Yesterday we went to the Hitmen game at the Saddledome because it was their annual charity event, the Teddy Bear Toss. The Calgary Hitmen are our local ice hockey team playing in the Western Hockey League (WHL). They are lucky because they get to play in the same stadium as our NHL team, The Calgary Flames. At this event you take a teddy bear to throw on to the ice when the Hitmen score. When you consider there were some 16,000 people in attendance for the event and when the Hitmen finally scored in the 2nd period, it was incredible to see all the bears being thrown from everywhere in the stadium to eventually find the ice. It took about half an hour for them to clear the ice of bears so the game could continue. Click here for some more pictures.

A Snow Storm!

Friday and Saturday we had a snow storm blow through. I had to shovel the drive twice on Friday and again on Saturday morning before we could get the car out. We took some pictures of the carnage and popped them here.

The White Stuff!

The snow is finally back and thankfully I managed to get the lights on the house before it arrived. Didn't fancy getting up on the roof with snow on it!!
December is finally here and we are all looking forward to our second Christmas in Canada, our first in our new home. We wish everybody a very happy Christmas.

Vancouver 2010

As the Olympic torch makes its way across Canada, kids have been given the opportunity to see and hold a torch that will be used at some stage in the relay. The Olympic torch officially comes through Calgary on January 19th. Sophie’s teacher took pictures of all the kids holding the torch and then emailed it to them. Pretty cool!!

New Deck

This weekend I set about re-newing our deck. There were quite a few rotten joists and boards and the main beam needed to be replaced. It was a big job but I had lots of help from the kids and friends and managed to complete the job late last night as planned. View the construction pictures click here

Golf at Kananaskis

Today I played golf with Nick and 2 of his friends at Kananaskis Country Golf Course in the mountains. The weather was beautiful, scenery was spectacular and golf indifferent. We all had a great day. Have a look at more of the pictures click here

Camp Brown

Last weekend we had our first ever family camping trip. We found a nice site, called Elkwood Campground, deep in the mountains in Kananaskis and pitched our 222 sq ft tent. We arrived on Friday lunchtime, as we were concerned about getting a spot. We needn't have worried.
That evening we cooked hot dogs on the camp fire and then marshmallows. The first night got very cold and we all struggled to get to sleep, which was also partly due to the baked beans!! We awoke the next day and had a hearty breakfast of scrambled eggs, beans (again!) and toast and then ventured out for a horse back trail ride. We got back to Camp Brown and started cooking our dinner, steak, smash and yep you got it baked beans. That night was a little warmer than the previous night but we still had some strange noises to sleep through. Sunday morning breakfast consisted of, basically everything we had left, eggs, toast, hot dogs, smash and of course beans. We then packed up our tent and took a detour via Spray Lake on our journey home. Click here for the pictures.

Whitewater Rafting

Today was Derek and Diana's last day so we decided to go whitewater rafting. We had such a good time rafting on the Kananaskis River, which was classed at 2 & 3. This meant that Sophie and Lewis could go too, so the whole family could have some fun together. Class 3 states that you will get wet! And we did. But we didn't care as it was a beautiful day with the temperature reaching 30 degrees C (around 84 F) and we were all kitted out with the correct gear, so the cold glacial water was very refreshing indeed. I have uploaded some more pictures - click here.

Black Belt Grading

Last Friday I took my black belt grading and the weekend course with Sensei Yaguchi. I found out tonight that I passed. I am now a black belt in Shotokan Karate :-) The picture is of me and a fellow student, also taking his black belt grading, in the kumite (free style sparing) part of the grading. Many thanks to all my karate friends back in the UK for the lovely emails. The picture below is me, showing off my new belt and Sensei Jones.

The Calgary Stampede and "The Big Show"

The Calgary Stampede has been on for this last 10 days and what a great fun time to be in Calgary. Everybody goes cowboy mad for the duration of the Stampede. Restaurants have bails of hay laying around and the waiters and waitresses all dress in cowboy hats and boots. The Stampede itself was rather special for us as Sophie performed in the Grandstand show, which is deemed as the greatest outdoor show on earth. We helped out program selling and managed to see Sophie for a few nights in the show. The show was amazing with fireworks, acrobats, circus artists on the new cable system which allowed them to float over the heads of the audience and of course the Young Canadians. The kids were absolutely fantastic!! Sophie enjoyed the whole experience and hopes she can be in the show again next year. I have uploaded some more photos - click here.

Here are Diana and Derek in Calgary.

We have had a great time so far, and have been made very comfortable. We have had a couple of short holidays in the Rockies, at Lake Louise and Jasper.
Now we are in the middle of the Stampede, have been involved in Program selling (We didn’t sell as many as Becca, or even Steve, but we did our best). It is a great event, we have learned a lot about Rodeo, and are enjoying the “The Big Show” which is certainly very spectacular with lighting effects and fireworks. At the preview show a thunderstorm was included.
We have also been introduced to Baseball, have seen matches and practice sessions involving Alex and Lewis, and a Calgary Vipers match. All that and we still have a couple of weeks to go!

Rehearsing for "The Big Show"

Here's Sophie at her other job!! This is in rehearsal for the Grandstand Show for this years Calgary Stampede. The title of this years performance is "The Big Show."
From what I've seen already it's shaping up to be a great spectacle!
Sophie is thoroughly enjoying herself there & has made some lovely new friends.
We have to learn to curl her hair!! Although we think we've cracked it!

"Annie"

Here's a photo of Sophie as "Molly" for her dance school show. They did an "Annie" tribute. Although not truly cast (there were no other parts given out) Sophie was! She had to speak a few lines & do some of the parts where molly pretends to be "Miss Hannigen." It was great fun!

The entire show was good & Sophie has decided to take a lot more classes next term! Much to the dismay of our bank balance!

Baseball season

The baseball season is well underway but we have few decent photographs yet. I hope that will be rectified soon!!

In the meantime here is one of Lewis (he's the one crouching down by 3rd base.)

June in Calgary!!!

What can I say, we woke up this morning to a little dusting of snow! But it's June, I hear you cry!! The weather had actually started to warm up and we have recently had days of 24 degrees, so it was a bit of a shock to wake up to this snow. This little guy attracted some attention outside our local Starbucks.

Some warm weather to go out in!

Spring is starting to threaten at last! The weather was teasing us with a tantalisingly warm Easter weekend, so we took the opportunity to take Sophie & a school friend biking to our local park.

The boys were both out - Lewis was with Ali & Nick in Florida (lucky swine) & Alex was out with friends.
The temperature reached 20C before this weeks dump of snow brought us back down to earth!!
On another note, our papers for permanent residency were submitted this week. Foothills Hospital is sponsoring Becky via the Provincial Nominee Program. Hopefully this will not be a long process!

Nakiska

Today was the last day of Spring break so Ali and I took the kids to Nakiska in Kananaskis, which is about an hours drive away towards Banff. Unfortunately Becky and Nick had to work, so it was up to Ali and I to sacrifice our day and take the kids skiing and snowboarding. We all had a great day, which was rounded off with Nick, Ali, Becky and I going out to the local Italian restaurant for a lovely meal without children! Check out a few more photos of Nakiska here

The big 40

Today was my 40th birthday. The day started with tea in bed made by Sophie and in the afternoon we all went to the cinema to see Race to Witch Mountain - a good family movie. We then went to Tony Roma's for dinner. We finished the day with my ice cream birthday cake. Here's to the next 40 years!!

We have moved!

We moved into our new house last week. Moving day was not the best, -24 and snow!! But we are in and once again unloading boxes :-( The good news is that we now have a guest room with a queen size bed, so we are ready for visitors!!!

Meet the new members of the family!

Meet Rambo, Jimbo and Pippin the new members of our family.
We visited the Calgary Humane Society yesterday morning to look for a couple of kittens for when we move into our new house (5th March). These three guys were in a room together and needless to say we could not leave one behind! We adopted them expecting to have to wait before being able to bring them home but they were all good to go, so home they came. They have settled in very well and are getting thoroughly spoiled. Here are a few more pictures of the boys. Click here

Young Canadians

Today Sophie had a gruelling day at an audition for "The Young Canadians of the Calgary Stampede" it started at 09:00 (which meant an 08:30 start for us.) She had an hour & a half audition which consisted of singing & then a dance class & did well enough to get a "call back notice."

That was for 4pm - we couldn't really leave because the hockey team were playing at the park so if we left we would never have got back in! Luckily there was a restaurant so we went for a long lunch & a couple of equally long walks to pass the time!

One thing to bear in mind was that she woke up this morning with a raging sore throat & stinking cold, so was feeling pretty rotten to boot!

They were running late so the call back didn't start until 4.30 in the end. That took another hour and a bit. However, the long & short of it is that she got in!!! over 100 girls & she got into the final 16 that made it. There are also 16 boys but there were only 19 to start with to choose from!

They perform the Grandstand show at the Calgary Stampede this July - so there are some very lucky Grandparents who will be seeing their Grandaughter perform in a very big show!!

For those of you who don't know what on earth I'm talking about here's a link to their website: http://www.theyoungcanadians.com/

If you still don't get it look up the Calgary stampede on Google!

Needless to say we're very, very proud of her right now!

First Ski/Snowboard of the year

Yesterday we made it to Canada Olympic Park, which is only 15 minutes from home, for our first ski/snowboard lessons since arriving in Calgary. Sophie decided to do skiing and the boys and I did snowboarding. Becky decided not to ski because of her dodgy knee, so she took loads of pictures instead. After our one and a half hour lesson we decided to continue and did another 3 or 4 runs from the top of the slop. We all had a blast! Everything was going really well until the final run when a skier decided to use me to stop. I felt like I had been hit by a train, but after the medics had checked me out I continued to the bottom of the slop. I now have some nice bruises and a rather painful back!! But we all can't wait to go again. Have a look at the pictures from the day, click here

Happy New Year!

Well, we started the year in the UK and ended it in Canada. What a year!
We enjoyed our first Christmas in Calgary especially as it was a white one. The only thing that spoilt it was that Becky had to work. Although she has 5 days off over New Year. We saw 2009 in at our house with a Turkey Christmas dinner (cos Becky missed it) and our friends Nick, Ali, Erin, Jacob and Nick's parents Judy and Chris. Needless to say it was a fairly boozy affair with the sing along version of Mamma Mia, silly games and sparklers! Here are the pictures from Christmas and New Year.
